“SXSW Adds White Mystery to 2018 Music Line-Up,” Austin Chronicle
Posted Thursday, November 9th, 2017 at 4:20 pm
South by Southwest has released a second wave of showcasing music acts for the conference’s 2018 iteration, including rock & roll life coach Andrew W.K. and recent ACL Fest performers Tank & the Bangas, the New Orleans funk and soul tribe that won the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk contest.
Today’s announcement adds 166 artists to the fold for the March 12-18 madness. The news follows last month’s initial cull of 207 performers, as well as a bulletin announcing country superstar Keith Urban as a featured speaker. That brings the total to 373 of what will ultimately be over 2,000 featured acts.
Other artists of note include folk-tinged experimental indie rockers Mothers, veteran punk philistines the Dwarves, Houston rapper Rocky Banks, and brother/sister swagger rock duo White Mystery. Also on the docket for the 32nd annual industry gathering are indie Americana songman Rayland Baxter, NOLA noise-pop duo Caddywhompus, and thoughtful Bronx hip-hop artist Kemba, who went by YC the Cynicbefore changing his performance moniker with the release of his fascinating 2016 LP Negus.
While leaning more domestic than last month’s announcement, we tally the additions of 15 Aussies, 15 UK acts, six Taiwanese artists, and performers from many corners of the globe, including the lurching art-rock of Holy Motors from Estonia, Barcelona techno troubadour Joe Crepúsculo, and Afro-Columbian synth-pop artist Lido Pimienta, winner of Canada’s coveted Polaris Music Prize.
Homegrown talent draws heavily from mellow indie circles with Molly Burch, Alex Napping, and Hovvdyhighlighting the local list. Bright Light Social Hour frontman Curtis Roush, alt-pop daredevil Walker Lukens, and shoegazey rock trio Ume also join the party. Singer-songwriters Barbara Nesbitt and David Halley, dark experimental synth artist Lachane, and cosmic Americana band Stone Wheels round out Austin’s ranks.
