WHITE MYSTERY “DUBBLE DRAGON” is in heavy rotation on CHIRP. Description:
White Mystery / Dubble Dragon / self-released / 2014 (LOCAL CURRENT) Fifth release for Chicago’s only garage-rocking, quasi-mystical, telepathic red-headed sister (Miss Alex White) and brother (Francis White) duo. This dubble album came out on April 20, 2014, named in tribute of the late-1980s Nintendo arcade game about cooperative sibling violence (it even features cover art that echoes the game’s logo). The release coincided with the band’s sixth birthday; the first disc is a collection of all-new songs, and the second is a full live concert recording made at the Double Door on November 20, 2013. WM gets plenty of “gender-reversed White Stripes” comparisons because of the band’s population and similar instrumentation, but the Whites sound more interested in burning down the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ old art school than keeping authentic blues-rock alive — “No!” (3) and “Yea You’re Welcome” (4) serve as both titles and lyric sheets. “Take A Walk” (17), “a song about walking about Chicago” (introduced in unison), is a good example of the band’s raw live power. White Mystery also carries a much more skilled drummer than the other band did (no offense, Meg). – Kyle Whelliston
