Continuing their annual tradition, White Mystery will release their latest album OUTTA CONTROL on April 20, the eighth anniversary of the date when Miss Alex White and her brother, Francis Scott Key White, joined forces.
The April 1 announcement comes a day after yet another notch in the band’s belt. White Mystery will appear on Last Call With Carson Daly, Thursday night, 12:35 Central Time.
The ginger garage/psych duo are longtime friends of WORT, having headlined last year’s WORT Birthday Party as well as the WORT Underground Stage at the 2013 Willy Street Fair. They are glad to share with the WORT community “Best Friend,” the opening track from OUTTA CONTROL.
Miss Alex White was more than happy to take the time for “Five More Questions With Miss Alex White.”
FS: Gave the new album a listen. Liked it. There are some definite surprises. Does this album represent a point of departure for White Mystery or is it an evolution of your sound?
Miss Alex White: White Mystery OUTTA CONTROL offers refined rock’n’roll to humans on earth. It’s a more concise pop approach that is different from White Mystery’s previous albums, which range from very punk rock (self-titled) to psychedelic (Dubble Dragon). So you could say this new album is a departure and back to basics at the same time.
FS: This album continues a long-standing tradition of releasing an album every April 20. What is the significance of that date?
AW: 4/20/2008 is the day Alex found a shiny silver wrapper on the sidewalk that said, “White Mystery: Outta Control.”
FS: And of course, April 20 is ten days before your birthday. What is the perfect way to celebrate your birthday?
AW: This year I turn 31 years old. I’ll take a long walk with the dog, then party with pals.
FS: You attended the Grammys this year. What was that experience like? And what is your connection to the Grammys?
AW: I am the Vice President of the Chicago Chapter of the Recording Academy, which is an organization that serves music professionals. This was my second time attending the Grammys in Los Angeles, and the experience was particularly awesome because there was free pinball at the official after party.
FS: It’s an election year. What White Mystery song might a presidential candidate use as their theme song?
AW: “People Power.”

FS: White Mystery just appeared on Carson Daly. How did that gig happen? What was the experience like? Did they show up at a particular gig or was it staged someplace?
AW: It’s been a longtime goal to perform on late night television, so at the beginning of this year, we mustered the guts to contact the Carson Daly show music supervisor, who quickly replied that he was already a fan of White Mystery. We’d like to thank our friends in “Sweat Lodge” for helping make it happen.
The show was set up at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, which is a legendary club where the Doors, Janis Joplin, and Cheech & Chong were discovered. We invited all of our childhood friends, family, and LA pals, as well as business relations, fans, and people who may be interested in attending the taping. I was really nervous about the performance, though when I got on stage, and saw a packed house filled to the brim with faces of people who I love, all the anxiety melted away.
