Who is Miss Alex White? Indigo child, genius, business maven, singer, songwriter, guitarist, fashion icon, celebrity? She may be all of those things and more. I wanted to meet her and do a photo shoot because she’s a local rock star and fashion icon, but I had no idea she was also savvy and extremely organized. You’d have to be to maintain her collection of — well, everything — jean jackets, cowboy boots, swatch watches, buttons, pins, stickers, guitars, photography, the list goes on.

Mostly, Alex is a crazy talented, stunning-yet-down-to-earth family girl. She shares her Chicago two-flat with her White Mystery bandmate and brother, Francis Scott Key White, and her parents, who live below them.

Alex is someone with both brain hemispheres working at the optimum level: creativity and logic are in sync and working together to create her own music, style, home and life on tour. I imagine that she has hundreds of songs and tour schedules in her head and yet she can tell you a unique story about every piece of clothing in her closet or button in her collection, as well as promote and play a sold-out rock show at a moment’s notice.

Alex doesn’t do any of her own clothes shopping anymore. Her super-stylish collection of thrift, vintage and custom-made clothes are mostly sent to her from fans, friends and family, and each piece fits her figure and personality perfectly.

She loves denim —  jackets, vests, skirts and bras. Alex was hand-picked by Levi’s to model for their #equipped campaign. At a photoshoot, she mentioned that she had always wanted a denim bra. Considering it a challenge, the master tailor on site immediately grabbed a jacket from the rack, some scissors and thread, and – bippity, boppity, boo – she transformed the jacket into a custom-made, custom-fit bustier for Alex right on the spot (seen cover photo and bottom row, center).

Her family is close-knit, supportive and creative, just like Alex. Her mom, Diane Alexander White, is one of Chicago’s beloved urban photographers. Her younger brother Nic White is a clothing designer who created the feminine-meets-utilitarian lace overlay pieces Alex is wearing below. Perhaps her lawyer father is where Alex inherited her business acumen and sense of logic. Clearly, amazing talent isall in the family.

Her home is immaculate and mid-century mod — no clutter; every prop/knick-knack or work of art is functional and beautiful. Each with its own story, symbolizing a piece of Alex White history and origin of style.

Be sure to check out White Mystery on their Outta Control tour starting tomorrow! I already have my tix to see them back where it all began at the Hideout 20th Reunion in September.
