When caring for someone with cancer, we often lose ourselves in the shuffle—making appointments, remembering medicines, keeping to a schedule, but forgetting to eat, forgetting to laugh, forgetting to enjoy the life as we know it. In her latest CELLULAR column, Jessica May Walker shares tips on how to be a better caregiver: You have to remember to take care of yourself, too.

Like finding peace and solace, which is necessary to be the best caregiver you can be, or to fight cancer to the best of your ability. As the ancient practice of reiki is helping to soothe harsh side effects of cancer treatment, even those not in treatment for cancer can benefit from good, strong, peaceful, healing energy. “It’s all about putting people into a different place,” says Jane Van De Velde, DNP, R.N, founder fo the Reiki Share Project.
