“Trash Rock Gathering of the Year,” CMJ

I’d bring a bottle of peroxide at least as big as the jug of moonshine that looks to be de rigueur at this inaugural Meltasia Music Festival. Noted, because aside from being a big-ass, three-day, camping extravaganza, the preponderance of the musical offerings across multiple stages is of only the dirtiest, rowdiest, lacivious sort. Sprung from the mind of Brooklyn gadabout, Andy Animal—longtime singer of the Stalkers— this amazing imbibe-a-thon is a more formally big deal version of his infamous yearly birthday party camping fests in upstate New York.
This time he took his ideas and little black book to Cherokee Farms, a 270-acre tract of land about 90 minutes north of Atlanta, and ammassed a gathering of grizzled ugh-sters like ’70s boogie masters Black Oak Arkansas and the space dusty Nik Turner’s Hawkwind, along with reliably grimy modern garage rock ratsos such as the Black Lips, White Mystery, Dirty Fences, Cheap Time, Coathangers, Daddy Long Legs, the Biters, Bloodshot Bill, Liquor Store and many many more.
Some slightly more restrained garbage can kickers are in there (Shannon And The Clams, Fletcher C. Johnson) so you can take a breather from throwing your empties across the crowd; not to mention some excellent soul/garage DJs like Jonathan Toubin, Josh Styles and Howie Pyro. Plus, Cherie Currie (of the Runaways) should make some music and chainsaw art (seriously). But for the most part, this looks to be THE trash rock gathering of the year, and one that no doubt scouted hard for a location miles away from the nearest working laundromat. But there will be a big lake to go swim in, so ya got that going for ya.
